Summer power conservation urged in S. California

State energy officials say Southern California should make it through the summer without major blackouts despite the shutdown of the San Onofre nuclear power plant — but conservation will be critical if the region is hit by a heat wave or major power line failure.

Officials on Wednesday unveiled a program that will prompt a flood of emails and TV ads when the state's energy grid operator declares a so-called "Flex Alert." People will be urged to turn off lights, turn down the air conditioning and postpone appliance use until evening.
